Travelers' questions about trips to Europe after volcano

Q: Do European Union passenger rights regulations require my airline to help with hotel and other costs if my flight is canceled?
A: According to EU rules, legislation covers all passengers on any airline flying out of an EU country, as well as passengers on EU airlines flying to Europe. Under those rules, if a flight is canceled passengers are entitled to a refund or "re-routing under satisfactory conditions, and should be adequately cared for while awaiting a later flight." That "adequate care" includes meals, phone calls and accommodations if necessary. Given the unprecedented nature and the costs of the week-long shutdown, the International Air Transport Association is asking governments to reimburse carriers for lost revenue, plus cost of hotel stays, meals and other expenses airlines paid while the ash cloud grounded flights.
