Shipyard business stays afloat
In Si Racha, a 40,000-tonne vessel operated by the US Navy, left Unithai’s shipyard, the largest of its kind in Thailand, yesterday after going through a two-week repair job. It was the fourth time the USNS Tippecanoe T-AO 199 has arrived in Thailand for such services.
Capt Timothy Lockwood said the port of call of the vessel, part of the 10-ship logistics fleet of the US Navy in Asia-Pacific, was not affected by the ongoing political strife in Thailand.
“What happened in Thailand had no impact on our arrival (by mid- April),” he said. “We have heard that the protest here has been peaceful and the government put a lot of efforts to handle the situation.’’
Much more important in the eyes of international clients such as the US Navy is the quality of the services.
“Services offered by Unithai are of the same quality and comparable to that we can find in Japan, Singapore, Korea and even Australia,’’ said Joseph Semon, the vessel’s chief engineer.
