Trailing Disasters: Savings, but at What Price?

In the past two months, political demonstrations have gripped the streets of Bangkok. Tens of thousands of supporters of  former Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra — the so-called red shirts  —  have shut down parts of the city, forcing cancellation of an Association of Southeast Asian Nations meeting and prompting security responses that have resulted in the deaths of at least two dozen people.

The standoff does not seem ready to ease, and the State Department last week issued a travel alert warning Americans to avoid “nonessential travel to Bangkok.” The Thailand of beaches and street food is not the Thailand you see in the news these days. Which is precisely why Thailand is square on the radar of Jeff Waldman, a 27-year-old carpenter from San Francisco. For him, the chaos means one thing: great travel deals.

“Ticket prices — if you forecast out about two months in advance, they’re $1,400 or $1,500, round trip,” he said. “Right now, if I leave today, it’s $840. I’ll probably head off to Thailand in the next three weeks or so.”
