iPad holding up pretty well
Pretty well. The key phrase is in that preceding paragraph: it’s rarely been out of reach in all that time. If I’m going to be away from my home or my office for more than an hour, I instinctively want to take my iPad with me. Why? Because it’s small and light enough that it’s only marginally less convenient than carrying nothing at all, and the 10-hour battery means that I needn’t be stingy about how often I use it.
It’s a complete blank slate of a computer, which means that it becomes any device I need at the moment ... whether I need it to be an ebook reader, a movie player, a way to look something up on the Web, or even a notebook-ish device that will let me check my email and then quickly write an 800-word column when a message reveals that a piece that I thought was due on the 30th was actually due on the 13th, two days ago. I don’t even need to carry a mechanical keyboard with me unless I’m specifically planning on doing a lot of writing. The lack of tactile feedback on the iPad’s virtual keyboard is off-putting but it’s roughly on par with the comfort and speed of a decent, but not superlative, netbook keyboard.
