Europe, in particular, is pricey as airports raise passenger taxes. "You'll see taxes of $80 to $90 per ticket if you're flying to the U.K.," Hobica says.

Supply and demand is a big factor in this season's higher travel costs. Demand for business and leisure air travel is increasing, yet many airlines cut capacity during the recession by parking older, fuel-hogging planes in the desert. The carriers, Hobica said, are not likely to put these planes back into service; rather, they will wait to purchase newer more fuel-efficient planes. "Most of these planes will be used for scrap," he said.

Another factor contributing to higher fares is consolidation of airlines. Northwest and Delta Air Lines completed a merger earlier this year, and Continental and United have announced plans to merge, which will create the world's largest airline. For the consumer, these mergers translate to less competition and higher fares.

"Back in the old days, one airline would lower fares, and then others would lower their fares in response," Hobica said. "That's all gone now."
