AAA: Texans to travel less for July 4 Bizjournals.com

The number of Texans traveling over the July 4 weekend will decline by about 3 percent compared with last year, AAA Texas predicts, although the number will exceed 3 million.

Nearly 2.8 million of those people will drive, about 220,000 will travel by air, and about 189,000 will take a bus or train.

AAA said the July 4th holiday is typically the busiest time of year for auto travel since nearly all school-aged children are out of school and, as a result, parents are more apt to take family vacations.

Nationwide, the number of Americans traveling for the weekend will also decline about 2 percent compared with the same holiday weekend last year. The drop in travel isn’t as steep as it has been. Last year, 38 million Americans traveled during the July 4 weekend, a 10.5 percent decline compared with the same weekend in 2007.

“Many Americans remain cautious about the outlook for their personal finances, and these attitudes are reflected in the slight decline in travel we are forecasting for the upcoming holiday weekend,” AAA President and CEO Robert Darbelnet says. “Those who do vacation this summer will find a plethora of attractive discounts and special offers resulting in some outstanding vacation values. If you can afford to go, this summer is a smart time to travel.”
